Dinesh Bihani, secretary of Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association told India Tea that due to fault of some tea manufacturers in Assam, the buyers at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) suffered loss from time to time. “We are just middlemen in the tea business. Our job is to buy and send tea consignment to destination. But for poor quality due to fault of some tea manufacturers, buyers hesitated to accept poor quality tea and result is our loss. Why will we suffer loss for fault of some tea manufacturers?” Bihani said. Even as Food Safety and Standard Act (FSSA) 2011 came into force from August 5 in 2011, nobody seems to bother to follow it. Many are even unaware of it, the GTABA secretary said, adding that three months ago, a German tea buying firm cancelled export of huge tea consignment from Assam because the tea send to the firm possesses heavy iron filing , exceeded the norms of iron filling in manufactured tea. “The quality of tea depends on many things. Apart from quality of tea, pesticide limits, packaging of ready products also count in making high standard tea. But it is for some manufacturers’ negligence, our tea fails to grab many major tea market,” Bihani said. As per the regulatory guidelines set up by Food Safety and Standard Authority of India under the union ministry of health and family welfare, all organizations managing food and beverage operations are required to implement good hygiene practices, good manufacturing practices and fulfill the requirements of codex Home And Community Care guidelines. As per the act, with the exception of farmers, all food business operators involved in processing, packaging, distribution, storage and transportation will come under the purview of FSSAI regulations and have to procure either license or get them registered with FSSAI as per their turnover in order to carry out business prior to February 4 in 2014. “Teas in general are consumed after a period of two to four months from the date of manufacturing. But unfortunately, the packing of teas in the state has been poor,” Bihani said, and added that FSSAI should bring tea manufacturers under its ambit.
