Bwudder! A word that when seen or heard brings back memories of a childhood long gone but still so vivid in the memory of this man. I hope you had the privilege of having a brother or sister that shared your childhood and of which you have the fondest memories. I did. I don’t know why my sister called me bwudder (brother but in a young person’s language), maybe it was what my mother asked her to do or just maybe it was a word of love for her big brother but in either case it meant me. When we were very young, probably 8 or 9 for me and two years younger for my sister, my mother went to work at a clothing factory within walking distance from our house. I became the baby sitter (although I use that term with some restraint because we each baby sat each other) and watched after my sister. Some of you may question those actions on my mother’s part but she trusted her children. Mother was a strong disciplinarian. She also was a loving person. We knew that if we misbehaved those loving hands would do the job and so when she said “lock the door, don’t let anyone in and behave!” she meant it. We followed her rules. We also had her number to call in an emergency and could walk to the factory in just a few minutes if we needed to. Since we were out of school at 3:30 and she was home a little after 5, we did not have much time to get in trouble. My sister and I enjoyed each other’s company. We would play games, watch tv when we got one and tussle like young’uns will do. I can’t remember the 2 of us ever getting mad at each other or even a hard word between us. It just didn’t happen. Of course the years past and we both became teens and started going our own way. Soon I was married with a child and she joined the air force( custest wac you have ever seen). What brought this moment of nostalgia on? My 70th birthday. She (Jo my sister and my brother-in law Paul) gave me a book “Things that Matter” by C. Krauthammer. Inscribed in the front is Happy 70th Birthday Bwudder! The book means a lot to me but the inscription is priceless. Luv my lil’ sis and always will.
