By Pastor Noel Lozano This time of year I always receive or see many comments, articles and pamphlets discussing the historical and biblical reasons why the church should not get involved in the celebrations of October 31st. Not wanting to take the value or the right to those opinions, let me give my opinion why I think we should, on biblical and historical basis. 1. The last time I read the Bible, Christ was still the King of kings and Lord of lords, the Creator of all and no one has more power than Him (Matthew 12: 6) -. (Because greater is he that is in you than that which is in the world. 1 John 4: 4) Why have you fear of someone who is weaker? 2. The option to stay home and not answer the door nor be part of anything that night does not seem to show the belief that light overcomes darkness and that we are the light of this world and when light is present darkness loses its effect. Light must not be hidden, it must placed high. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill can not be hidden. Nor a lit lamp be put under a bushel, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. (Matthew 5:14 -15) 3. The concept that things that once belonged to the enemy can not be used for the glory of God, I am not sure is biblical. Many say that the celebration has much evil influence and Im sure they might be right, but where in the Bible does it say something that belonged to the enemy can not be transformed by God for His glory? Baptism was not always the symbol of death and resurrection to new life in Christ. The church, before Jesus made it his, was not used for his glory, not to mention the cross or tomb. But mostly you and me, you and I once belonged to the enemy and not God. You mean a person who has been dedicated to Satan, the church will never make an effort to redeem? Ive known people whom after a life stuck in the deepest darkness have come to the feet of Christ through the efforts of someone who knew that the power of God is limitless. 4. That night many leave or let their children leave to collect candy, I believe the church should be there to deliver the sweet message of Christs love. Fear! Fear of what? Fear must have the enemy when the church (the only institution that not even death will prevail against it) opposes him to steal what does not belong to him. If the devil believes there is one night of the year that belongs to him, Whom better to inform him than the church that its not so. The best way to experience that not even death shall prevail against it (the church) is facing and overcoming death. So then, if October 31 is the day of the dead, let us turn them into life through the redemptive power of our precious Jesus Christ. I urge you in the name of Jesus to go out this night and proclaim that Christ is Light, Life and Salvation. And I have the impression that this pleases Him more than to hide in my house. Therefore, submit to God; resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4: 7
