‘By the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous’ (Rom5:19) Today’s First Reading concerns original sin. If there were no original sin, there would be no need to be saved, and no need for Jesus to die on the cross. What is this all about? Human beings were created obedient to God. “Your law is within my heart” (Ps39[40]:8) sings the psalmist. But Adam & Eve trusted knowledge more tan God (Gen3:5-6). They who had once walked with God, turned their backs on him. Without God’s Spirit, they had no way of knowing the saving truth - they were ‘dead’. Because -use of their transgression all humanity would henceforth be born with the stain of sin. St. Anselm (11th century) says that since God is infinite, the sin of Adam against God was infinite; hence there was no was that finite man could ever be free. Only someone infinite and sinless could re-establish the covenant between man and humanity. God having pity on us, sent his only Son to give life and make reparation. The psalmist also states that God does not desire sacrifices, burnt offerings, or sin offerings (Ps39[40]:6). Is this an early prophesy that only Jesus’ sacrifice would be enough to re-establish the covenant? Isn’t it confirmation that in Jesus we have a sure remedy – if we trust in him, he will save us. FRUIT: Today I will humbly place my trust in Jesus, who alone can save me.
