CA Council for the Social Studies annual conference was awesome, in spite of my bad cold and laryngitis. Got to meet two women who were the subject of Supreme Court rulings-- Sylvia Mendez (Mendez vs. Westminster School District) and Mary Beth Tinker (Tinker vs. Des Moines). Mendez family sued when WSD would not allow her to enroll in a white elementary school. Ruling-- separate is not equal. Tinker was from a Quaker family, and in 8th grade she merely wore a black arm band to protest soldiers dying in the Vietnam war (didnt disrupt class), and was suspended. Ruling-- freedom of speech/expression does not stop at the school house door. I teach about both of these experiences, so now I have photos and video to share with my students.
