CALIFORNIA AQUIFERS POISONED BY FRACKING While the States Water Shortage Becomes Grim ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT STORIES IN THIS COUNTRY NOT GETTING COVERED In the midst of the worst drought in California’s history comes news that hydrofracking operations are polluting the state’s dwindling water supplies. First, fracking is very water intensive, and the water used in it cannot be treated for later use by people, industry, or for agriculture. Activists says that the water intensive process takes up to 150,000 out of the regional water cycles each time a well is fracked. Second, there is the concern about the contamination of water resources. And last environmentalists say that the both the fracking process and the great amounts of oil and gas that will be consumed as a result will create great amounts atmospheric carbon, further contributing to climate change and possibly creating or exacerbating droughts in the future. The State Water Resources board also stated that water samples taken from eight water supply resources close to the injection sites have texcessive levels of toxins and carcinogens, including thallium, a chemical found in rat poison, and arsenic, a known carcinogen which can also wreak havoc on the endocrine and immune systems of humans and animals. “Arsenic and thallium are extremely dangerous chemicals,” said Timothy Krantz, a professor of environmental studies at the University of Redlands. “The fact that high concentrations are showing up in multiple water wells close to wastewater injection sites raises major concerns about the health and safety of nearby residents.” Link to Article: alternet.org/fracking/california-aquifers-poisoned-fracking-while-states-water-shortage-becomes-grim?akid=12352.312752.5_ZWEz&rd=1&src=newsletter1022995&t=21&paging=off¤t_page=1#bookmark This is called right wing ideology: “Profits before people and who cares about the Future” Halliburton and Koch Industries are two of the major fracking companies that keep pushing and then covering up the damage they are doing to the environment. I really see this country losing almost all of its clean water supply to Fracking. To be honest that is exactly what the Koch Industries would love to see making Water more expensive than gold or oil. Jeff -- 2014
