CALL TO PRESIDENT OBAMA TO ANNOUNCE STOP DEPORTATIONS IN STATE OF UNION MESSAGE PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact Persons: Armando Vazquez-Ramos (562) 430-5541 Angela Sanbrano (323) 371-7305 In an open letter addressed to President Barack Obama, the Protect Our Families Campaign, has called on the president to include in his State of the Union message an announcement to stop deportations and grant protected legal status to all undocumented in the U.S. The letter is signed by pro-immigrant organizations and individuals, and is part of a National Day of Action programmed for January 24, 2014, four days prior to the State of the Union address to the nation. The National Day of Action will include press conferences and actions in multiple cities and states including California, Illinois, Washington, and Arizona in an effort to hold the president accountable for his promises and commitments to the Latino community with respect to fixing the broken immigration system. The Open Letter informs Obama of the Los Angeles City Council resolution approved December 18, 2013 in support of the initiative taken by Congress-members Raul Grijalva and Yvette Clarke who sent their own letter to the president last month, signed by 29 colleagues, asking him to use his executive authority to stop deportations due to the absence of any agreement on immigration reform. The letter also makes mention of a similar resolution introduced by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which will be voted on January 28, 2014. “Also, you should be aware that the California Latino Legislative Caucus and many other political jurisdictions in California, Illinois, Washington, and Arizona are considering the same at the moment that you receive this letter. This is the rising of a national movement to protect our families,” the letter indicates. It mentions that hundreds of thousands of U.S.-born children have been deported along with their undocumented parents and that tens of thousands of minors have been taken into custody by local departments of social services and left for adoption at an extraordinary expense to taxpayers. “The mass deportation of more than two million immigrants has earned the administration the legacy of ‘Deporter-in-Chief’,” declares the letter. “As we get closer to the national day of commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” the letter adds, “we believe that you have the opportunity to be a great emancipator of immigrants and we ask you to join us and the progressive members of Congress led by Representatives Grijalva and Clarke.” “Mr. President, on January 28, 2014 grant protected legal status to all eligible immigrants for legalization, begin the process of legalization for the “Dreamers” and with that measure put an end to deportations,” request the campaign leaders. The press conference of January 24, 2014 in Los Angeles will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the art gallery of the Mexican Cultural Institute located in the Olvera Street (125 Paseo de la Plaza), Los Angeles, California 20013. Local and state elected officials will be present at the press conference to support the campaign.
