Effective Strategies to Improve Care of Patients with COPD This program is available for credit until December 30, 2013 Accreditation This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the University of Virginia School of Medicine and Public Health and Discovery Channel CME. Program Overview Discovery Channel presents an all new Continuing Medical Education program focused on issues related to COPD. Dr. Shim and Dr. Truwit discuss strategies to improve the care of patients with COPD, to control symptoms, and to minimize further damage. Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: •Increase ability to recognize patients at risk for COPD and make a prompt, accurate diagnosis in patients with COPD. •Select appropriate treatment according to symptoms and stage of COPD. •Increase understanding of the clinical impact of COPD exacerbations. •Apply current guidelines and recent research to reduce the likelihood of exacerbations, with attention to efficacy and safety of pharmacologic options. •Describe the evidence supporting pulmonary rehabilitation and exercise training, and identify their roles in COPD care. Target Audience This educational activity is designed for primary care physicians, community pulmonologists, physician assistants, nurses and nurse practitioners.
