CAN THE MEMBERS SIT TOGETHER? What & How, Engagement & Reconciliation. Second Objective: WHAT? • Commence community engagement and reconciliation with the membership by using safe and welcoming methods for all to participate and have their voice incorporated into plans and decisions relevant to them. HOW? If elected, I feel this will indicate that the membership is willing to take engagement seriously. In 8 moths, this task will require the involvement and commitment of the community members that reside here and those who do not to determine how they want to be involved, the guidelines to participate, preparing to be productive, and being clear about what they expect from their work and that of others. Meaningful involvement, consistent invitations, and also meeting those where they are comfortable, on the phone in their home or somewhere neutral if needed to discuss the business and activity of the band always encouraging building real relationships based on understanding the position of others. I want to ensure people feel safe, welcome and a sense of confidentiality and respect always for their contributions and willingness to take part. The community Gathering Place will serve as a location for the community, their families and individuals as a space that belongs to all the members to relax, share, be healthy and learn once again. I have been asked to support the membership who wish to plan and host together a Healing & Reconciliation Feast & Ceremony this summer for all those who belong to the Burns Lake Band. This event is to convene those from the entire membership to honour the traditions of gathering, the territory, and the trauma of relocation and other impacts of how AANDC policy has impacted all members. The intent will be to build trust and acknowledge the anger and frustration everyone feels at this time and respect the situation the community now faces of severe division. The use of technology and social media will be important to use with non-resident members to take part in meetings, training, ceremony, and other forms of community business and activities available to them. And we want everyones ideas! Maybe the fence can be painted and the internet watch-sites set up to voice on-reserve concerns can be shut down? Engagement is ONLY worthwhile when its meaningful for all. Your thoughts are always welcome! You can message me here. (Stay tuned, tomorrow I will detail Setting Tomorrows Priorities - Programs and Economics!)
