CAPE TOWN – Nearly 900 members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) faced fraud and corruption charges in the 2012/2013 financial year. This emerged from the SAPS Annual Report tabled in Parliament, Cape Town. Most of the charges involved helping people to escape from police custody, followed by corruption, fraud and defeating the ends of justice. Of the 892 police members who were charged with fraud and corruption in 2012, 97 faced more than one charge. At least 22 were suspended, eight with their salaries and 14 without pay.
