CARING AUSTRALIANS – NIKKI & LIN On Tuesday I had the pleasure of meeting Bali Street Dog Fund/BAWA supporters Nikki and Lin from Melbourne We met at the BAWA shop and then went for lunch locally and of course the conversation was all about dogs. Nikki and Lin had been to the Barong Dancing in Denpasar on the way to Ubud and in the car park they found 2 heavily pregnant dogs and another couple who had bad skin conditions, so I took down the details so I could inform BAWA. After a lovely lunch we parted company so they could go to an Art Gallery at Lodtunduh and I went to Janice’s office and whilst I was there who should walk through the door but Nikki and Lin – they had managed to track me down via their driver Made who is a friend of mine. When I said “Hi Ladies’ they didn’t say hi back, the words “there are 3 dogs you need to save” came rushing out of their mouths. They said there were 3 dogs chained up at the art gallery that were in bad condition, they had tried to give them some dry dog food they were carrying with them but the dogs would not eat it. Seeing the distress on their faces I was taken 150 metres down the road to the Art Gallery and I found 3 young dogs, 2 in very bad condition and a little healthier chained up. I immediately noticed that there was no water available and when I asked one of the staff for water and bowls he said was scared of the dogs so II told him I would give water to the dogs. As water was delivered to each dog I was able to take photos to send to BAWA. The white dog was getting “chain rub” on his neck and didn’t look too bad apart from that but the other two dogs were severely malnourished. The black and white dog looked very unwell, she had dug a hole in the sand and lay in it shivering. I got in the car and went to the local supermarket and bought cans of dog food and bowls and went back to feed the dogs. The white dog and black dog ate their food up within seconds but the little black and white refused to eat so my suspicions of her not being well were confirmed. The owner of the Gallery came out and I tried to explain that his dogs need more than a handful of rice each day, they need, rice, eggs, vegetables and chicken mixed together and fed at least once a day but preferably twice a day to ensure water is always available I told him that I would arrange BAWA to come and check on the sick dog and I have asked BAWA to try and educate the owner about the importance of feeding his dogs and supply fresh water and to exercise this dogs rather than leaving them chained up. Thank you Nikki and Lin for alerting me to these dogs and the ones near the Barong Dancing – your caring and compassion is something that all Bali dogs need. If you are travelling in Bali and see a dog that needs urgent medical attention please call the BAWA ambulance on 08123840133. One phone call can save a life!
