CATHERINE KING MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR HEALTH MEMBER FOR BALLARAT SENATOR JAN MCLUCAS SHADOW MINISTER FOR MENTAL HEALTH SENATOR FOR QUEENSLAND MEDIA RELEASE UNFAIR BUDGET ATTACK ON HEALTH TO BE EXPOSED AT SENATE HEARING The impact of the Abbott Government’s Budget on pushing up out-of-pocket expenses in healthcare will be examined at a Senate Community Affairs Committee meeting in Canberra tomorrow. The Abbott Government’s first Budget is an attack on low and middle income earners and an attempt to pick Medicare apart at the seams. Cuts to hospitals and health care, and the introduction of a $7 GP tax will add to the growing cost of out of pocket expenses as the Abbott Government seeks to wreck Labor’s legacy of universal, decent and affordable health care Senators will hear evidence from former Health Department Chief, Stephen Duckett, now with the Grattan Institute, The Australian Medical Association and officials from the Department of Health at the one day hearing. Labor will be seeking answers to how much the Abbott Government changes will hurt families, and how much more out of pocket all Australians will be as a result of its unfair, regressive and deeply unpopular Budget.
