CBC Co-Host to be GranFondo PEI’s First Celebrity Rider Charlottetown, PEI: Many people regularly listen to As it Happens co-host Jeff Douglas on weekday evenings. What people may not know about Jeff is that he is an avid and accomplished cyclist. He rides all over Canada, and in Columbia in the winter, and has competed in many road races. In his most recent race on July 1st he picked up a bronze medal at Ontario Provincial Criterium Championships at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. We are very pleased to announce that Jeff Douglas will be our Celebrity Rider for the inaugural GranFondo PEI being held August 23 - 25 in Prince Edward Island. “When the organizers called”, say Douglas, “my first reaction was, Yes, I would love to ride in PEI. It is beautiful, the course looks awesome, and even though I spent time there years ago, I have not seen it from the saddle. I am also looking forward to the post-ride food and entertainment that the organizers have put together”. In addition to his work on As It Happens, Jeff is well-known to Canadians as host of the award-winning documentary series Ancestors in the Attic (History, Global). He has travelled across the country and back in time exploring the lives of the common worker throughout Canadian history in Working Over Time (History Television) as well as starring in the documentary series Things That Move (History Television/National Geographic Canada). More recently, he starred in Making History (National Geographic), an internationally broadcast four-part series exploring and re-creating significant historic places and events. Jeff also hosted the 161 country-wide live broadcast of Jetman Live (National Geographic). Jeff Douglas has won numerous awards for his work including three Gemini nominations. He is also a Kari Award recipient for playing Joe Canadian in the now legendary "I Am Canadian" campaign. Jeff’s acting credits include The Famous Jett Jackson (Disney), Black Hole High (Discovery Kids) and, Mudpit (Teletoon). Islanders may remember Jeff from The Feast at the former Charlottetown Hotel, which is where he began his acting career. Born in Truro, Nova Scotia, Jeff currently lives and works in Toronto. Jeff will accompany GranFondo PEI VIP’s on an exclusive ride and will be on site at the Rider’s Village located in the New Charlottetown Convention Centre. Jeff will also be riding in the Gran Fondo on Saturday, and riders beware. He has a shot at the best time! GranFondo PEI is an initiative of Cycling PEI.
