CBC posted and interviewed me about the Lions Bay slide video I made last year. They, as a news source, lightly addressed the risks involved. As they arent whitewater kayakers, it is hard for them to understand what is happening outside how fast we can go down the drainage structure at Lions Bay. The comment thread in this article is very similar to the one last year, some people think its great, others are rightfully concerned about our safety as well as the safety of those with less experience who may come after to run the slide. Though I would call the slide safe (ish) what I said last year was, when someone sees the slide, how steep it is, and how you cant see through all the turns. That should be enough to keep people dropping in at a lower elevation to suit their own abilities and feel it out. To those concerned about the property, we paddle to the bottom and walk up, as far as I know we arent trespassing. Where we put in this time was at a naturally damaged area in the chain link fence likely caused by falling limbs or a tree. I dont want to touch on how people view the risks I take in comparison to the risks they take or dont take. After spending 10 days in a Vancouver hospital getting treated for Leptospirosis (a deadly bacteria that claims 50% of hospitalized cases) I feel incredibly fortunate and truly appreciate that my only financial concerns after that, were for the 2 ambulance rides I took. Of course there are always variables, but I wouldnt go #intotheditch if I wasnt pretty sure I would be paddling away from it. BC adds another classic to the list. Just Kidding people have been running this slide for years and years. We just have GoPros now.
