CBN controller commends ECWA over empowerment policy By KENNETH DAKOP Branch Controller, Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN), Mr. Mathias Kurah, has commended the efforts of the leadership of the Evangelical Church Winning All, (ECWA), at empowering its members and communities through the establishment of the Gowans Micro Finance Bank. Kurah gave this commendation during the dedication of the Micro Finance Bank held at the bank’s headquarters in Jos, Plateau State capital, recently. He said ‘the pursuit of economic empowerment is a task that has no alternative if we must alleviate poverty and lift up the standard of living of our people.’’ The step you have taken in establishing a Micro Finance Bank is definitely a step in the right direction and I want to assure you that we at the Central Bank of Nigeria, Jos branch, will work with your bank to ensure that people become productive and develop good savings habits, as well as provide access to financing,’’ the controller assured. Also speaking during the occasion, Chairman, Board of Directors, Gowans Micro-Finance Bank, Panyi Polandu, disclosed that the mission of the bank was to glorify God by empowering people to overcome poverty and imbibe good banking habits. Polandu further stated that: the strategic thrust of the bank will be on individuals, strong member-based cooperative unions/ associations built around but not limited to agriculture; health construction, transport, etc, as a means of reaching wider coverage within the shortest possible time. In his submission, ECWA General Secretary, Reverend Professor Samuel Kunyihop, affirmed that the establishment of the bank was designed to reposition the finances of ECWA through economic empowerment initiative, as well as, pooling resources toward the achievement of greater synergy. “For the individuals, associations, co-operatives, registered entities and other categories of customers that would benefit from the decent services to be provided by the bank, we promise a culture of excellence, respect and integrity inspired by God,’’ he added. On his part, Finance Director, ECWA, Moses Kolawole said the idea was borne “out of the desire to professionally assist the Executive in identifying potential sources of funds, adequately exploiting such sources and ensuring that funds available are meticulously and judiciously applied to achieve organisational effectiveness in the quest to glorify God.’’
