CBSE to stop publishing sample papers for classes XI and XII Posted bynews-reporteron June 18th, 2013 Have the Central Board of Secondary Education students cracked the code to score high in the Board exams? The board feels so and has decidedto stop publishing the popular sample papers forclasses XI and XII from next year as the number of high scorers have increased significantly in the recent years and that the sample papers have contributed to this trend. In fact the increase in the number of high scorers has been significant since 2011. In 2013, 44,676 (5.03%) students scored 90% and above as against 15,839 (2.5%)five years back. Even the number of students scoring 95% and above have increased from 1020 (0.16%) in 2009 to 7231 (0.81%) this year. The in last meeting of the governing body of the board the issue was discussed and it was decided that the sample papers will no longer be made available to the senior secondary students. The sample papers have been on print for over 20 years and used to give the pattern of questions that can be expected. In fact many private publishers also publish their own versions of sample papers based on these sample papers as they are very popular among the students. As per CBSE the decision is taken as many students restrict their studies to the sample paper solving and yet score high marks without really knowing the complete syllabus. The board feels that without the sample papers the studentswill have to go through detailed studies instead of selective mode. “Students are increasingly getting selective in their studies and the sample papers seem to havebeen contributing to this. It’s not a healthy academic practice as students need to study in a comprehensive manner. Therefore, the sample papers hence forth will not be available. The board has initiated a number of exam reforms which include higher order thinking skills, value-based questions and open-text based assessment so that the assessment system is enhanced,” said chairman of CBSE, Vineet Joshi.
