CDC: Flu Very Active In 24 States. In continuing coverage, the CBS Evening News (1/16, story 9, 0:15, Rose) reported that on Jan. 16, “the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the flu is very active in 24 states” and has resulted in the deaths of 45 youngsters. ABC World News (1/17, story 8, 1:25, Vega) reported, “The flu can strike anyone,” even killing people in good health. ABC News correspondent Bazi Kanani was shown saying, “The flu season is still peaking in some areas, with several weeks to go.” In a follow-on segment on ABC World News (1/17, story 9, 0:40, Vega), ABC News senior medical correspondent Jennifer Ashton, MD, advised people who suspect they have the flu to “stay home” and “minimize contact with other people.” On NBC Nightly News (1/16, story 2, 2:40, Williams), NBC’s chief medical editor Nancy Snyderman, MD, was shown saying, “Within 48 hours of the first sign of the flu the CDC says doctors should prescribe an antiviral like Tamiflu [oseltamivir] even over the phone, not even having to see the doctor.” USA Today (1/17, Hughes) reports that the flu is also affecting “senior citizens in nursing homes, assisted-living facilities and hospitals across the country...thanks in part to a vaccine that failed to offer strong protection from the virus and a strain that’s particularly bad for the young and the old, federal health officials say.” Late last year, the CDC “predicted this situation...warning that the dominant form of the virus circulating, H3N2, is known to hit young children and the elderly hardest.” Making matters worse is the fact that “this year’s flu vaccine doesn’t protect well against the specific variation of that type of virus.” Bloomberg News (1/16, Cortez) reported that with influenza “intensity increasing in some states and decreasing in others, it’s too soon to say if the season has peaked, the CDC said.” usatoday/story/news/nation/2015/01/16/flu-hitting-elderly/21721811/
