CENTRAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL – Open House 2014-November-22 I - TopicsExpress

CENTRAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL – Open House 2014-November-22 I attended the Open House for all Central Elementary School alumni, staff and students which required an explanation given several times. I was given a name tag as soon as I signed in and it read : RANDIE SCOTT -Almost 1957. I was prepared for starting Grade I at what was supposed to be the brand new Bernard Elementary School in the fall of 1957…but the construction was somewhat delayed. As an interim measure I was enrolled to commence Grade I at Central Elementary and then switch to Bernard Elementary when it was ready. Mere days before the start of Grade I the local School District decided that most elementary school kids in my ‘catchment area’ of the old VLA Sub-Division would be bussed to Sardis Elementary School for a few months. Consequently, I never actually went to Central Elementary. That sure did not mean I never knew any kids who went there for I was friends with a great many of them while in elementary school and also when I went to A.D. Rundle, Chilliwack Junior High School and then Chilliwack Senior Secondary School. Central’s field (albeit gravel at the time) was often used for baseball, soccer and touch football games involving me and my friends. You could always tell who had recently played at Central because of the usual ‘road rash’ suffered when hitting the non-grassy field. Today started up with sharing a coffee with Merlin Bunt, Sandy Mullan Steinson, Wayne Bowes & Colleen Bowes. When the Open House began we walked over to Central Elementary and had a look around the halls. The gym was decked out with hundreds of photos from over the school’s lengthy history and I had a chance to catch up with many friends I have not seen for far too long. I even bumped into a grey-haired 55-year old man I used to baby-sit when I lived over on Carleton Street. There were the requisite official welcome, singing of ‘Oh Canada’, First Nation Drummers, a great slide show of the school’s history and a cake cutting by newly re-elected Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz. Following the official program in the gymnasium there were tours of the whole school led by current students who were quite knowledgeable and gave great commentary. While I never really attended Central, it was nostalgic for even me.
