CEO Tasmania tackling high unemployment & Challenging Buisness CEO Tasmania has committed to a new internship program, in response to Tasmania’s high rate of unemployment, and is challenging other Tasmanian businesses to do the same. CEO Tasmania sees internship programs as part of the solution to Tasmania’s unemployment rate – which is the highest in Australia. “CEO Tasmania is always looking for new ways to support the next generation of leaders,” said Managing Director Polly Venning, “Internships are just one way that we are going about this.” Young Tasmanians are particularly at risk, with unemployment rising by as much as 59% over the past two years. “We see internships as a way to help young people transition into the world of work.” said Executive Membership Manager Mike Ellis, “It allows young people to develop the skills they need to integrate into the workplace.” Recent university graduate James Goodricke is the first to take part in the new program. “This internship is a great way for me to develop the skills and connections that I need to break into the employment market.” He said, “I’m very grateful for this opportunity. “One of the greatest challenges I faced in the job market was finding an employer that would take the time to develop my professional skills,” said James, “I was actually turned down from a job because it was cheaper to employ someone without a university degree.” CEO Tasmania also conducts business coaching and mentoring programs for all levels of employees. “As Tasmania has such a small population, contributions such as internships can have a dramatic impact on the rate of employment,” said Mr Ellis. “And we would challenge other businesses to also consider in-house programs.”
