CERC committed to promoting efficiency in power sector New Delhi, July 26, 2013 Commemorating fifteen years of its existence, Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), a key regulator of power sector in India has resolved to continue to act with same fortitude and uprightness in carrying forward its mission of promoting competition, efficiency and economy in power sector. Speaking on the occasion, Shri V S Verma, the senior most member of the Commission said, CERC has created a niche for itself in the power sector by virtue of its progressive actions towards furthering reforms and for bold decisions on several vexed issues. The Commission has endeavoured to live up to the expectations of the stakeholders and is committed to do so in future years. Shri Deena Dayalan, Member, CERC said in his remarks that the electricity regulator has attained heights in terms of credibility and reliability as a professional body over the years. This has been possible because of active participation and co-operation of the former chairpersons/members, present members and more importantly due to arduous efforts of its staff. He exhorted the staff of the Commission in taking informed decisions and assured that the Commission would always remain committed to its ideals of carrying reforms forward in the power sector. A statutory body, CERC was initially constituted on 24 July 1998 under the Ministry of Power’s Electricity Regulatory Commissions Act, 1998 for rationalization of electricity tariffs, transparent policies regarding subsidies, promotion of efficient and environmentally benign policies, and for matters connected electricity tariff regulation. CERC also regulates the tariff of power generating companies owned or controlled by the Government of India, and any other generating company which has a composite scheme for power generation and interstate transmission of energy, including tariffs of generating companies.
