CHAMBERS WANTS SCHOOLS TEACH PUBLIC HEALTH …Writes House Plenary By Sallu K. Swaray Maryland County Representative Bhofal Chambers has called for the reintroduction of the teaching of public health in schools. The Southeastern region lawmaker has accordingly written to the House of Representatives requesting it’s plenary to coordinate with the Executive in the process of implementation of this request to reintroduce in to the national educational architecture a public health unit in all Liberian schools. In his letter addressed to members of the House of Representatives, Rep. Chambers said he was writing to plenary purposely to request the August Body to coordinate with the Executive in reintroducing public health teaching in the education in the national curriculum for all levels of schools in view of the present unprecedented health crisis in the nation is faced with. Dated August 27, 2014 and read at the House plenary by the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives, Rep. Chambers said public health was included in the national curriculum in old days. Dr. Chambers indicated that doing so will create personal hygiene indoctrination amongst the population and will create consciousness about basic health practices that will not allow viruses to prevail amongst the people in the way the Ebola virus is at present. Rep. Chamber further stated in his communication to the House of Representatives that inclusion of public in the educational architecture will provide appropriate and regular health services, as well as education on various diseases and the methods of prevention. “I have no doubt that if such health measure is put in place, it will certainly go a long way in providing the necessary safeguards to our student population in preventing most, if not all, virulent diseases and thus [help to] avoid the recurrence of such situation in the future,” Dr. Chambers added.
