Who is responsible for the government shutdown? FreedomWorks originated the idea for the shutdown on Valentines Day this year. (freedomworks.org/blog/ryanriebe/joint-letter-on-sequester-savings) Mark Meadows (R-NC) circulated a letter which got 80 Republican congressional signatures in August, strongly championed by FreedomWorks. The letter to the Speaker requested a unified Republican front against Obamacare, a complete scorched-earth policy to even include obstruction of continuing appropriations bills. (timesfreepress/news/2013/oct/04/the-letter-behind-the-shutdown/) The House passed a budget defunding Obamacare. The Senate passed a budget funding Obamacare. Since April, Senate Majority Leader Reid, Senate Budget Committee chairwoman Murray and a few others have tried to get the budgets into conference, only to be blocked from negotiations by Tea Party Senators--19 times. (nationaljournal/congress/19-times-democrats-tried-to-negotiate-with-republicans-20131007) The one thing that could have stopped the shutdown was House Rule XXII Clause 4, which would have allowed a majority of the House to get the bill on the floor for the purpose of stripping amendments. But Republicans passed House Resolution 368 back on October 1st to put all the power in Cantors hands. (huffingtonpost/2013/10/13/house-republicans-rules-change_n_4095129.html) The National Park closures that the Right believes are Obamas fault, are actually established guideline since the LAST shutdown. (theatlantic/politics/archive/2013/10/how-the-national-parks-became-the-biggest-battleground-in-the-shutdown/280439/) So, basically, the Republicans planned the shutdown in every little detail except for how to get off the crumbling ledge that they are currently standing on. When they blame the shutdown on Democrats they are flat-out lying. And their biggest post-shutdown tantrum, about the National Parks being Obamas fault? Also a big lie.
