CHANGE VALENTINE DAY TO BLOOD DRIVE DAY - VODEC Voice Of Developing Communities (VODEC), a non-partisan and not-for profit non-governmental organization has given the Blue-Print that the National Calendar should be re-visited to change Valentine Day to Blood Drive Day, the least anyone could do was to talk about the situation, saying “The real deal is in taking a stance and doing something about maternal and child healthcare. As part of our civil social responsibility, patriotism and public engagement strategy to ensure the availability of blood, the Voice Of Developing Communities (VODEC), a Non-Governmental Organization(NGO), in Collaboration with Korle-Bu Blood Bank has organize a blood donation on Friday June 7th, 2013 at the Amasaman Municipal Hospital in the Greater Accra Region to raise awareness and educate Ghanaians on the need for them to donate blood to save the lives of mothers and their newborn and want blood donation considered as a national priority. 'Anybody can give blood and the truth is, if we can encourage this attitude, the positive ripple effect is enormous for the society and the country as a whole. Blood is essential for the survival of every human being. In fact, no single human being can survive on this planet without having blood in his vein. This made blood irreplaceable, indefatigable and indispensable to man. As a nation with a faster growing rate, we must prioritize blood donation and as a matter of fact, begin to think about a day to set aside for mass blood donation drive. This we believe is the only way forward and response to the shortage of the blood at our various blood banks in our hospitals. According to statistics from the Ghana Health Service (GHS), it has been revealed that loss of blood during delivery is a lead cause of maternal deaths in the country. It indicates that out of the 250,000 pints of blood needed yearly, mothers and children require 75% that is 187,500 pints but only 66% is obtained. The situation had thrown some difficulties in the effort to improve maternal and child health in Ghana. It is also evident that in the past few years, Ghana has seen so much cry for blood from the nation’s hospitals such as Amasaman Municipal Hospital, Police Hospitals, Tamale Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ridge Hospital, 37 Military Hospital, Nsawam Municipal Hospital, Tema Hospital, Korle-bu Blood bank etc. Information available further indicates voluntary blood donation has been very slow whilst the need for blood continuously goes up, because of this situation Voice Of Developing Communities decides to organize a blood donation exercise to support the Amasaman Government Blood Bank and Mayera –Faase Clinic to save lives. The event was also used to identify children with elephantiasis in the Amasaman Municipality and seek medical support for them. VODEC will also encourage the collective efforts of all those who care about the rights of children and women, to pull their resources together to eradicate the disease in the Municipality and Ghana. The event was one of the many activities designed to increase public awareness and to facilitate public discussions on maternal health in the country and will like to thank Blue Skies Company Limited, Africa Cola, Hollow Natural Mineral Water and Maryland Catering Services who were our key sponsors for supporting us with their Products.
