CHAPTER ONE The pain traveling up and into the pilots shoulder became unbearable. It crept over his upper chest and he slumped forward against the seat harness, his hands falling from the wheel, dropped onto his lap and he died. The small ten seat plane flew on somewhere over the mountains in the Teton National Forest, gradually losing altitude. The first tree top ripped a gaping hole in its belly, luggage spewing onto the mountainside. Jim lost consciousness as another tree sheared off the tail section in front of his feet. It skipped from tree to tree, coming to rest upside down in the lower branches of a large Douglas Fir tree, a few feet off the ground. The two seats, still attached, had a body hanging from each with their arms and legs dangling toward the ground. They didn’t see the explosion or flash fire, as the rest of the plane cart wheeled into the mountain side. Slowly, consciousness returned to Jim bringing pain and sensations he could not explain. The pounding in his head and the pressure across his lap were unbearable. Opening his eyes, everything looked surreal as fire burned in the distance. Fantastic shapes and shadows danced in the darkness around him. He was hanging upside down and the hammering pain that accompanied each heartbeat was blinding. Moving his arms was nearly impossible, yet with enormous effort, he finally managed to touch his forehead, where he found a warm sticky wetness. Flames moving in a grotesque ritual, lit the area enough for him to see the dark stain on his fingers. What it meant eluded him and he gave into unconsciousness. Several minutes passed before his eyes opened again. Shadows played across the area and he tried to understand what he was seeing. The sound of rain hitting the aluminum skin of the tail section, only added to his confusion. “Where’s my hat” he muttered, feeling for the black cowboy hat he always wore, “and where’s that bull that stomped me?” Light from the fire cleared his mind and remembering the woman who had taken the seat beside him, he twisted, turning his head to look for her. Instantly regretting the sudden movement, he fought back the nausea that followed. She was dangling from her seatbelt. Taking her hand and fumbling for her pulse, he uttered, “Thank God,” as he found it strong and steady. An action, adventure, survival love story set deep in the higher elevations of the northern Rocky Mountains.
