CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – If you don’t maintain your generator you could be out of luck if the power goes out. Over the last few weeks we’ve seen thunderstorms with a lot of lightning and strong gusty winds move through western Massachusetts. Those storms have caused power outages across the region. Back in 2011, after the October snowstorm, some people lost power for days and many people invested in home generators. It’s important to have that generator serviced regularly. According to Contractors Home Appliances President Brian Zippin, “What they do is charge some where from $250 to $350. They will do a complete check up, they will change the oil they will change the spark plugs and they’ll just do an overall tune up to make sure the unit will continue to perform.” Be sure that you find someone who is authorized to service your generator. If you have a portable generator it’s important to make sure the fuel in it is good and you may want to put an additive in it. Home generators operate using natural gas or propane.
