CHIEF MINISTER ARRIVES IN CHENGDU FOR WORKING VISIT CHENGDU (CHINA), TUES: The Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Haji Adenan bin Haji Satem yesterday arrived in the city of Chengdu in Sichuan Province China for a two-day working visit. Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan, who was accompanied by his wife Datin Patinggi Dato Hajah Jamilah Haji Anu, was received by officials of the Dongfang Electric Corporation and Kunming Consul, Nasri Rahman upon arrival at Chengdu International Airport. On his arrival at the hotel here, the Chief Minister and his wife were received by the Minister of Land Development, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr. James Jemut Masing and the Minister of Industrial Development and Minister of Public Utilities, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan and their wives who had arrived earlier. In the evening, the Chief Minister and members of his entourage were treated to a welcome dinner hosted by Dongfang Electric Corporation at the same hotel. In his speech during the dinner, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan said that he and his ministers had come here to learn from the experience and the expertise of the Chinese in the field of hydro dams engineering and construction. “We have no experience in constructing hydro dam and we need foreign expertise to assist us,” he said. He pointed out that Sarawak which is endowed with many rivers need to tap its hydro-power potentials to generate electricity which relatively cheap and renewable to run its industries. He however, regretted that the construction of dams in Sarawak has been made more difficult due to instigation by mainly by foreign-based NGOs. Today, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan had a formal meeting with the company officials at the company’s headquarters here before visiting its turbine and generator manufacturing plant. In the evening the Chief Minister and members of his entourage attended a banquet hosted by the leader of Sichuan Province at a local restaurant. Members of the entourage include the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Public Utilities, Haji Ubaidullah Haji Abdul Latip and Chief Executive Officer of Sarawak Energy Berhad, Datuk Torstein Dale Sjoveit. Earlier in the day, Tan Sri James Masing and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah visited the Zipingpu Hydro-power dam near here. They were briefed by officials of the hydro-power dam on the operations of the dam which also provides water for irrigation and water supply for the population.
