“CHILDREN OF PROMISE” Romans 9:8 (AMP) That is to say, it is not the children of the body [of Abraham] who are made God’s children, but it is the offspring to whom the promise applies that shall be counted [as Abraham’s true] descendants. Children of Promise, that’s who we are. Today’s scripture says that it’s not the physical children of Abraham who are made God’s children. It’s the children to whom the promise applies. The promise was that a great nation that would come out of Isaac and his descendants. We may not be Hebrew by race, but the bible says that because we have Jesus, we’ve been adopted into the family of God and all the benefits and promises that had been made to Israel now belong to us too. It’s really cool and sounds really great to be able to say, I am a child of promise. The question is, what are the promises? How do they apply to me? I’m really glad you asked that question. I’m not going to cover all the promises; just hit a few of the highlights. We’ve covered a lot of these promises in our daily word, but they bear repeating. • Deuteronomy 28: God will show favor toward us and these blessings will overtake us. We will be blessed in the city and the country, meaning wherever we live. We’re blessed in our work, our families and when we come in and go out. Pretty much covers it all. • Isaiah 54:17, God promises that no weapon formed against you shall prosper and every person who tells lies against you shall be proven wrong. That’s a good one. • Jeremiah 33:3 God says if we call on Him, He will answer us. • Hebrews 13:5, God says, “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.” There’s a promise to hold onto. • Philippians 4:13, 19 Paul gives us some promises that he has learned from experience. We can do all things through Christ, Who empowers us. God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in Glory by Christ Jesus. • 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. This is the all-important promise that gets us to all the other promises. These are just a few of the promises. We need to realize that because of Jesus and because we’ve accepted Him as our Savior, we’ve been adopted into the family of God and we are spiritual descendants of Abraham. Therefore, all the promises made to Israel, by God, belong to us as well. It breaks my heart to realize that I personally do not live in the fullness of these promises and I only listed a few of them. We’re missing so much that God has offered to us. Obviously we don’t deserve what He has given us and even more than that, we haven’t received what He has held out to us and said, “Here, this is for you. It’s free, take it.” Still, we just stand there, living in lack when we are supposed to be abundantly blessed. Living by faith is not as hard as we have made it out to be. It’s the conscious act of believing. Walk up to a pregnant woman and ask her how she knows she is pregnant. She will tell you she knows because she can feel something ALIVE inside of her. She feels it move and stretch and kick. There’s no lack of belief here. That’s how our faith is supposed to be. Try this: tilt your head back and say this, “God, I trust you.” Say it again, “God I trust you.” If you learn to do this EVERY TIME you get into a circumstance or situation over which you have no control, you release the awesome power of God into the circumstance. Even if you have trouble believing He will take care of it, speaking this simple line will build your faith. Jewish rabbis have a saying, “What you say comes toward you and what you write down comes to pass.” Every time you tell God that you trust Him, your faith grows. Writing it down and hanging it up in your house causes your faith to grow every time you see it. We can all agree that God desires to bless us. I’m not condemning you. I’m pointing a finger at myself as well. Thank God that His mercies are new every morning. That means that today is a new day. My sins of the past have been forgiven. In fact, my future sins have been forgiven too. I just need to acknowledge His mercy and accept His forgiveness. I’ll just throw this in, no charge, we need to forgive ourselves too. We are blessed! We are abundantly blessed! We’re blessed beyond our wildest dreams! As you go about your day, realize that the promises of the Father belong to the children and WE ARE THE CHILDREN OF PROMISE!
