CHOOSE YOUR ADVISERS CAREFULLY When Solomon succeeded his father, David, as king of Israel, God told the young monarch to ask for anything he wanted-fame, wealth, power-and it would be given to him. Solomon chose wisdom. He wanted the ability to make wise decisions as the ruler of Israel. God was so pleased with Solomons answer that he made him wiser than anyone whos ever lived (and then threw in fame, wealth, and power to boot). Solomon was Known throughout the ancient world for his discernment-his ability to choose the best course of action in any situation. People from distant lands regularly traveled to Jerusalem just to witness his wisdom in action. The book of Proverbs is Solomons how to manual-his primer on supernatural discernment. A key theme or proverbs is finding sources of wisdom. Solomon described the search this way: My child, you must follow and treasure my teachings and my instructions. Keep in tune with wisdom and think what it means to have common sense. Beg as loud as you can for good common sense. Search for wisdom as you would search for silver or hidden treasure. Then you will understand what it means to respect and to know The Lord God! (proverbs 2:1-4) To be wise, you must recognize and value the right instruction. In other words, you have to know where to look and whom to listen to. Thats the challenge. One thing is certain, though; you will find no shortage of would-be advisers jockeying for your attention. Everyone has advise to offer, life experiences to pass along, instructions for doing things the right way, and rules to live by. The question is, which one should you take to heart? In order to give your search for wisdom due diligence, as Solomon recommended, you need to carefully evaluate the people who advise you . DO THEY HAVE A GOOD REPUTATION? IS THEIR INTEGRITY APPARENT? ARE THEY TRUSTWORTHY? ARE THEY RESPECTED BY PEOPLE YOU RESPECT? DOES THEIR ADVICE JIBE WITH THAT OF OHER PEOPLE YOU TRUST? DOES IT DEPART RADICALLY FROM AN ACCEPTED BODY OF WISDOM? DO THEY PRACTICE WHAT THEY PREACH?HAS THEIR PHILOSOPHY AND OUTLOOK MADE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR OWN LIVES? You only get a chance at this life. Surround yourself with the best people.
