CHOOSING YOUR POLITICAL LEADERS - BY DAVID OGBUELI. There are qualities for selecting political leaders. For us who are Christians, leaders of churches and God’s people we should not go around presenting an individual unless we are sure of the person’s value. We should not present denomination nor should we just pick any person just because we like his political party or the platform he is using. Our candidate must have integrity, service, and servant leadership because values are the foundation for transformation in any society. As we think about voting in the forth coming elections, we should not thwart God’s program on earth by using our influence or our vote to enthrone the antichrist system. You don’t vote your church or denomination, you vote for the man that has the values of the kingdom who will implement righteousness. If you vote for the wrong person and he does not establish good hospitals, roads, electricity etc., one day it might be either your friends or your family members that has health challenge and due to lack of facility in hospitals such person dies, what will you say? Hear me; social problem is not one person’s headache; what happens to a society affects everyone living in it. Keys for choosing a political leader Deuteronomy 17 v 14-20 When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me; “Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.” We should make sure he is a believer and is God’s choice. He must be one among us; one that believes in God’s value system. We shouldn’t use our vote to enthrone a pharaoh or their representative. The question now is -how then do we know the one that God has chosen, seeing that they all claim to be believers? We can know God’s choice through our prayers and by the guiding of the Holy Spirit. When we ask God on whom to vote, we should also be sensitive enough to know who the Spirit is leading us to cast our vote for. But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you, ye shall henceforth return no more that way. The MESSAGE Bible translates it as ‘He doesn’t bind up a war machine, amassing military horses.’ Being just a believer is not enough; he must not use power to surround himself with ammunitions and he should be someone that will facilitate the spread of the gospel and godly value system not the one that would lead people back into idolatry. Remember, if a wrong person is being voted into power, Ritual killings and kidnapping etc will surface again and you don’t know if it will be your friends or family members that will be a victim of their evil plan. Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold. He must have values for family system. He shouldn’t have or take many wives other wise they may turn his heart away from God. He must also not to use power as his potential for accumulation of wealth. Qualities our political aspirants must possess if we are to vote for them. 1. He must be a model citizen. He must be an example for all citizens in the community. For example, he is law abiding, he doesn’t get himself involved in anything questionable. 2. He is a builder of community. He must be a person driven by the common good of the community not just his personal interest. Before anyone comes to present himself asking for our vote, we should have seen some things he has done for community development. 3. He is a builder of common wealth. We need to see things he has done to empower families, to create jobs, to help put food on the table of people before we deem them eligible to have our votes. 4. He raises the moral standard of the society. Among all the political aspirants we must check the one that has good moral standard not the one that is an epitome of corruption. Once we enthrone a wrong person, he is bound to destroy righteousness in the land. 5. He is a builder of destinies. He doesn’t just build the common wealth, good roads, good schools, and good hospitals; he should also be someone that can take people to their destinies in life. With policies he creates enabling environment for people to thrive and for innocent citizens to survive. In the forth coming elections, we should not thwart God’s program on earth by using our influence or our vote to vote for the wrong person; someone who doesn’t have a vision for leading. Please we should not pick any person just because we like his political party or the platform he is using.
