CHRISTMAS EVE, 1914: Legend has it that Allied and German soldiers in at least on location agreed to an impromptu truce. Captain A.D. Chater, serving with the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders wrote a letter home about the brief peace: “We were just going to fire on them when we saw they had no rifles, so one of our men went to meet them and in about two minutes the ground between the two lines of trenches was swarming with men and officers of both sides, shaking hands and wishing each other a happy Christmas. We exchanged cigarettes and autographs, and some more people took photos. Sainsburys, one of the UKs largest supermarkets, produced this extraordinary video of that Christmas Eve truce, 100 years ago.
