CHURCH OF RESURRECTION ALSO KNOWN AS THE CHURCH OF SPILLED BLOOD Alexander II possibly was the most reform minded Emperor of Russia. He abolished serfdom and started constitutional reforms. Albeit, he was assassinated in 1868. The spot where his blood was shed on the cobblestones was preserved and his son and successor built a church around it. Public had no access to the church and after the Bolshevik revolution the beautiful church was used as a fruit and vegetable warehouse and as a morgue during the Nazis siege of Leningrad. After the disintegration of Soviet Union the church has been painstakingly restored to its original magnificence. The canopy is over the spot where the Tsars blood was shed on the street pavement. The Icons on the walls and ceiling are formed by minute fragments of ceramic crystals
