CII SEMINAR on Industrial Safety : Regulations, Standard and Practices Visakhapatnam, October 25, 2013 : Confederation of Indian Industry (C I I ) Visakhapatnam Zone organised a one-day seminar on “Industrial Safety : Regulations, Standard and Practices in Visakhapatnam today. Delivering the keynote address at the inaugural session Mr N S Rao, Director (Projects), Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd emphasized the need for a robust health and safety systems and practices in an organization. He said safety is an important aspect of a company’s smooth and successful functioning. It is a decisive factor in organizational effectiveness. It ensures an accident-free industrial environment. Companies must attach the same importance towards achieving high occupational Health and Standard performance as they do to the other key objectives of their business activities. He quoted some of his own experiences in RINL and other organizations as well on the aspect of safety measures. Mr Rao appealed to all the industry delegates to adhere to safety practices in their own organization and inculcate a culture of safety amongst employees. He said safety is a continuous process and it must be adopted as a habit by each and everyone in the organsiation. Absence or lack of safety in work place and any damage done to the environment and eco-system affects the very root of sustainable business for any production unit, Mr Rao added. Mr. G Sambasiva Rao, Chairman, CII Visakhapatnam in his welcome address said proper attention to the safety and welfare of the employees can yield valuable returns to a company by improving employee morale, reducing absenteeism and enhancing productivity, minimizing potential of work-related injuries and illnesses and increasing the quality of manufactured products and rendered services. A sound environment, health and safety practices is a prerequisite for organizational sustainability and scale new heights. World over, evidence shows that companies who implement effective safety and health programs can expect to see their injury and illness rates reduced by 20 percent or more. Mr Srinivas Duggirala from BSI Group India Pvt Ltd made a very detailed presentation on the various systems and standards on occupational Health and Safety with case studies. Mr Sandeep Arunagiri, Technical Head of 3 M Ltd spoke about respiratory protection, hearing conservation and eye protection programme with regard to safety. In a very livey interactive session Ms Padma Hemanth, Senior Faculty from Unique Consultants spoke about the attitude towards safety and on the importance of organizations and employees developing a positive attitude towards safety; inculcating culture of safety across the organization and making safety as a habit for employees. Mr Muralidhar Rao, Senior Manager – Safety, Essar Steel India Ltd shared some of the best practices on safety adopted by Essar for a sustainable development. The seminar was attended by over 100 industry members from manufacturing and services industries.
