CIRCLES The waiter has come by my table three times. He is an atheist and wants to understand why I am religious. Weve had several pleasant exchanges over the years but this is the first time he has actually set down to ask questions. He is very serious. He asks how I identify myself. Do I think of myself as a Presbyterian, a Christian or something else? I tell him I live in concentric circles that I try to keep in balance. I am Presbyterian as a way of being Christian. I am Christian as way of joining all religions that seek to understand and celebrate life. I am religious, but only as one aspect of the larger human search for meaning which must take place within our best scientific understanding of reality and within universal human rights. Within the smaller circle I can share life in an intimate and caring community. Within that larger circle, it is my delight to join atheists, skeptics, scientists, poets and mystics as we all attempt to make sense of our time together here on planet earth.
