CITY DARK - SCAS PROGRAM - FIU FRIDAY, MARCH 21 8 P.M. Please join us in CP-145 lecture hall, FIU Physics Building, free SCAS program for the popular film CITY DARK a documentary about the dangers caused by increased light pollution within our metropolitan cities, suburbs, and rural areas. An award-winning, independent non-fiction series on PBS-TV, CITY DARK illustrates this silent, invasive problem. Thanks to our friends from Broward and Palm Beach, members of International Dark Sky - S. Florida (IDASF) who will provide the film. SCAS & IDA members will conduct the public Open Forum following the 1-hour film. We need to hear voices from local parks, local government, environmental groups, lighting engineers, scientists, faculty and students. The intense outdoor lighting within Miami Dade County wastes volumes of money, causes visual irritation/risks with night driving, harms wildlife, sea turtle hatchlings, causes hundreds of migrating birds to crash into light skyscrapers, and diminishes the stunning southern night skies. WE NEED TO HEAR YOUR REASONABLE SUGGESTIONS! Recent results from National Park Service scientists using research level CCD cameras recording the night sky above three national parks in S. Florida may also be shown. SCAS / IDA goal is to propose a Miami-Dade County outdoor lighting control ordinance. The Miami Skyglow is visible from E. Naples and from mid- Florida Keys. ARRIVE EARLY! 8 p.m.- prizes and announcements 8:30 p.m. CITY DARK film 9:30 p.m. OPEN FORUM conducted by SCAS and IDA members with audience participation & refreshments.
