CITY OF CAPE TOWN 6 JUNE 2013 STATEMENT BY THE SPEAKER OF THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN, ALDERMAN DIRK SMIT Request to the President to intervene in disruptive behaviour Today, 6 June 2013, I have written to the President of South Africa, Mr Jacob Zuma, asking him to interrogate the recent disruption of two meetings in Philippi, hosted by the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, by individuals claiming to be ANCYL members. The meetings, part of the Mayor’s ‘Know your Community, Know your Contractor’ campaign, are aimed at informing residents of their rights and obligations with regard to contracted service providers. At both meetings, disruptions and threats of violence to community members and property forced the meetings to come to a premature end, for the safety of residents and the Mayor. This has regrettably prevented residents from engaging with the Municipality and from exercising their right to express their views. The President, at his State of the Nation address earlier this year, committed to act to stop violent protests in the country. As such, I have asked him to refer the matter to the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster for further action. In terms of the Municipal Structures Act and the delegations of Council, I have a duty to ensure that Council and Councillors conduct their business. Part of this business is community engagement. In terms of my oversight role of the business of Council, I have sought to bring this matter to the President’s attention and request the necessary interventions from his Office. I await his reply.
