PORTUGAL GRANTED RESIDENCY TO 11900 FOREIGNERS IN 2013 FOR WHICH MAXIMUM COMING FROM AFRICAN COUNTRY KNOWN AS CAPE VERDE FOLLOWED BY SAO TOME AND PRINCIPE ANGOLA SENEGAL USA CHINA Portugal was the main destination for emigrants from Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) in 2013 as the country received 56.4 percent of the 11,900 people that emigrated from the West African archipelago last year, Cabo Verde’s National Statistics Institute (INE) said at the end of April. According to INE, of the citizens that left the country in 2013, of which 50.7 percent were women, 56.4 percent settled in Portugal, and a long way behind was the United States (15.4 percent), France (7.2 percent), Brazil (4 percent) and China (3 percent). Amongst the reasons for emigration are continuing with studies (36 percent), reuniting with family (21.4 percent), job seeking (20 percent) and health reasons (8 percent). In the opposite direction, according to INE, Cabo Verde welcomed 17,807 immigrants (64.3 percent of which were men), accounting for 3.5 percent of the total Cape Verdean population, currently estimated at 512,000 people. Most of the immigrants in Cabo Verde were born in Guinea Bissau (22.3 percent) and Sao Tome and Principe (20.9 percent), followed by Angola (13.1 percent), Senegal (9.9 percent), Portugal (9.6 percent), the United States (4.1 percent) and China (4 percent). The percentage of immigrants from other countries is estimated to be between 1 percent and 1.5 percent.
