Many of you will know that next week I am taking part in a trekking challenge in Yorkshire for the Alzheimers Society, The Three Peaks Challenge. Since signing up to do this many people I know have come forward and told me their personal stories of how dementia has affected their families, friends or lives. I chose to take part after my Grandfather was initially diagnosed with vascular dementia last year. Since then more recent assessments have shown he has mixed dementia, a combination of vascular dementia and Alzheimers. I cannot even begin to describe the effect his illness has had upon our family, pushing us all to our very limits, for some of us, it has literally pushed us to breaking point. I look at my Grandfather some days now and barely recognise the man whom used to drive me round pretending we were in a Formula 1 race, whilst driving a combine harvester!. I know we as humans cannot cure everything, but I would like to think that even if I raise a small amount of money it may go towards supporting others going through what my family and I are going through, and long term more preventative medicine and knowledge.
