CITY OF SANTA MONICA invites applications for the position of: Plumber SALARY: $27.02 - $33.35 Hourly $2,161.38 - $2,668.15 Biweekly $4,683.00 - $5,781.00 Monthly $56,196.00 - $69,372.00 Annually OPENING DATE: 08/12/13 CLOSING DATE: 08/30/13 05:00 PM JOB SUMMARY: Performs skilled, journey-level installation, construction, maintenance and repair work of plumbing systems in City buildings and facilities. MAJOR DUTIES: Installs and repairs fixtures such as toilets, urinals, lavatories, faucets, showers, drinking fountains, backflow devices and flush valves. Replaces water heaters. Repairs, replaces, and maintains boiler systems, gas furnaces, heaters, gas valves, sump pumps and recirculating pumps. May repair sewer ejector pumps. Maintains plumbed water systems. Installs pipes and fittings, such as copper, galvanized iron, blackpipe, cast iron, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and ABS. Replaces plumbing fixtures to conform with water conservation standards. Clears stoppages with electric top-snakes, sink machines, main sewer machines, chemicals and blow bags. Performs rough plumbing and service connections for new installations. Prepares preliminary drawings for new installations and remodeling. Prepares and submits requisitions for materials and supplies in accordance with division procedures. Prepares materials lists for work assignments. Prepares and maintains accurate records on work completed. Performs preventative maintenance duties. May train and provide technical assistance to others, as assigned. Follows applicable safety rules and regulations. Performs other related duties, as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of: Uniform plumbing code. Plumbing trade practices and procedures. Hand and power tools and equipment. Safe work practices and procedures. Principles and procedures of recordkeeping. Basic mathematics. Effective customer service techniques. Ability to: Troubleshoot plumbing problems. Safely operate heavy sewer machine equipment. Safely operate hand and power tools. Assemble and install air, gas, water, and related systems. Install and repair pumps and backflow devices. Perform physical labor for sustained periods. Work from atop tall ladders and in confined spaces. Crawl and crouch underneath buildings. Lift, carry and move heavy objects up to and including 50 lbs. Learn and use required software applications to retrieve, open and close work orders. Read diagrams and plans. Follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public. Provide effective customer service. Skill in: Reading, writing, and communicating at an appropriate level. Preparing layouts for rough plumbing installations. Education, Training and Experience: Graduation from high school or the equivalent. Successful completion of an accredited apprenticeship program to obtain journey-level plumbing status is desirable. Two years of recent, paid, work experience performing journey-level plumbing duties. Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C driver license. Possession of a valid journey-level plumber license. Backflow Prevention Device Tester Certification issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health must be obtained within six months of date of hire.
