CITY SURE OF SECURING WORK PERMIT FOR KELECHI IHEANACHO ENGLISH Premiership champions Manchester City are confident of securing a work permit for Nigerian midfield maestro Kelechi Iheanacho during the January transfer window to enable him start playing for the club come January. On January 1, the European league transfer window opens and Kelechi, who has been on Manchester Citys books since last season, is expected to join the senior team then. Born on October 3 1996, Iheanacho was voted the best player at the U17 World Cup in December last year, taking home the golden ball, while also winning the silver boot for being the second highest goal scorer in the tournament. Immediately after the tournament, Manchester City signed him up but under European work permit rules, non-European Union players are not allowed to play within the community until they are 18. In October this year, Kelechi came of age and is now eligible to play in the Premiership once he gets his work permit. Manuel Pellegrini, Manchester Citys coach, rates the young playmaker very highly and featured him during the clubs pre-season tour. He even allowed Kelechi to train with the Argentine national team before its friendly with Portugal last month. A Manchester City spokesman said: “We are optimistic that Iheanacho will get a work permit, that is what everyone is looking forward to. He should be able to prove his mettle and break into the first team. “Manuel Pellegrini wants him, which is important. He has to be considered as a special talent to get a work permit and Manchester City are not prepared to loan him to another team. After completing his transfer to Manchester City in January, Iheanacho was given the number 72 jersey and participated in the clubs pre-season tour of the US, scoring twice during a mini tournament. He has since been loaned out to American league side Colombus Crew but is now ready for the big time and has even been invited to Nigerias Under 23 team.
