JOB DESCRIPTION: Responsibilities: The Community News and Volunteer Coordinator (CN) is a full time position that is responsible for the coordination of community news volunteers, general station management and the in-take of new volunteers. The CN must ensure that CKUT’s community news programming fulfills its requirements as determined by Canadian Broadcast Laws, CKUTs Statement of Principles, and all internal policies, guidelines, rules, and regulations. The CN is responsible for assisting community news programmers (such as Off the Hour, Native Solidarity News, Morning Afters, Dragonroot Radio Amandla, and Listening to Latin America programmers in coordination with interns and the Spoken Word Coordinator. The CN will also recruit news volunteers, coordinate regular meetings for special programming or community events, supervise interns, book interviews and resources for news productions, facilitate the weekly community news meeting, and regularly assist volunteers in the needs of the department. The CN will also maintain regular community and campus contact through outreach and events, plus work in coordination with volunteers and staff to host regular radio broadcasts from the community, including, but not limited to: the Homelessness Marathon, Aboriginal Celebrations Day (with Spoken Word Coord), Decolonization Marathon, Prisoner Justice Week, indigenous youth broadcasts, Morning After Cafe Remote Series (with Spoken Word Coord), McGill Daily Campus Remotes, and remotes from political demonstrations. The CN will organize volunteer training weeks for the in-take and training of new volunteers. The CN is a member of CKUT’s Steering Committee. The CN will support the contract workers who coordinate the Homelessness Marathon, McGill Assistant Volunteer Coordinator, Under the Weather Coordinator and other contract workers. The CN will work with the Funding Coordinator to secure funding for these and similar future projects through grants. The CN will work with community organizations to offer special radio programs to marginalized groups. Duties: -Steering committee; -Coordinate shows; -Coordinate and evaluate interns, Homelessness Marathon Coordinator and Under the Weather Coordinator; -Social media and website for news program -Work with McGill Daily on campus broadcasts and regular news reports -Messages, email and phone; -organize Volunteer Training Weekends -Community events & special broadcasts; -News and other meetings for special events/bdcast coordination; -Community outreach; -Work with Funding Coordinator in securing grants for projects in the department; -Recruiting volunteers; -Orientation; -Offer Wednesday Morning After training session; -Weekly cleaning; -develop guidelines and manuals; -Coordinate radio projects with community organizations Qualifications: -Familiar with CKUT Radio and the Community News Collective -Experience in script-writing editing documentary & technical production -Experience coordinating volunteers -Excellent listening skills -Demonstrated research analysis & presentation skills -Experience in coordinating community activities -Demonstrated interviewing & journalistic technique -Demonstrated training & teching abilities -Demonstrated commitment to social justice, public service & advocacy -Demonstrated skill in radio & sound production -Ability to work under pressure & meet deadlines -Ability to learn new tricks -Experience with social media -Computer proficiency -High level English Spoken/Written -French Spoken -Ability to work in a community environment where consensus is the norm -Ability to interpret and articulate CKUT’s policies Assets: -Experience in campus community radio -Self-motivated & willing to initiate projects -French spoken/written, -Third language spoken/written (esp Spanish) -Graphic Design -Strong ties to Montreal community organizers and organizations
