"CLAIM: There should be no drilling unless there is proof there is no risk to ground and drinking water. Officials cite a video from Pennsylvania, in which a flame can be lit from tapwater and say this might happen in Lancashire. THE REALITY: The methane in the US tap comes from old coal mines, and had contaminated supplies long before fracking. The Royal Society says the risk is ‘very low’ when shale gas is extracted as deep as it would be in Lancashire. CLAIM: Would-be frackers Cuadrilla has refused to say what chemicals it will add to the water, while ‘toxic’ flowback seeping back up the pipes poses a risk. THE REALITY: Cuadrilla has so far added only common salt and polyacrylamide, a lubricant found in contact lens fluid. Flowback water does contain tiny quantities of minerals that emit radiation, but well below the permissible level for drinking water, and officially classified as non-hazardous."
