CLASS VII: YEAR FINAL EXAMINATION 2014: ENGLISH FIRST PAPER PARAGRAPH (a) GREAT WOMEN The term ‘great women’ refers to those women who raised themselves from the ordinary level to that of extraordinary through their hard labour, determination, will-power and struggle. In the male-dominated society women are always supposed to be confined in houses and to be busy doing household chores. But going against the prevailing social attitude and gender discrimination some women set examples as women can also be great by contributing a lot to the mankind. In spite of the various challenges that women face, there have been many famous leaders in the world. Even though some countries are not favourable, or were not favourable to having women leader, this trend is changing, and women leaders are becoming more common these days. Here are some of the worlds famous women leaders, who have made a great impact on society. Begum Rokeya is such an immortal personality who became great for her extraordinary contribution to the development of female education and thus to the development of the society. Born into a prominent Rangpur family in 1880, Begum Rokeya pioneered women’s advancement at a time when all women across the sub-continent were being crushed under by the forces of the British Raj and traditional society; for Muslim womanhood in Bengal, restrictive, repressive purdah was the only way-of-life. Helen Keller is another women who became an example for women despite being physically handicapped. American educator Helen Keller overcame the adversity of being blind and deaf to become one of the 20th centurys leading humanitarians. Florence Nightingale, a nurse, spent her night rounds giving personal care to the wounded, establishing her image as the Lady with the Lamp. Though her rich parents wanted her to be a noted professional, she dedicated herself to nursing the ill and wounded from her very girlhood. From a very young age, Florence Nightingale was active in philanthropy, ministering to the ill and poor people in the village neighboring her family’s estate. By the time she was 16 years old, it was clear to her that nursing was her calling. She believed it to be her divine purpose. She became great for her humanitarian roles. There are many more women who became great because of their humanitarian activities. Great women were not born great. It is their extraordinary roles that make them great. People admire them with deep respect and feel proud to follow their foot-prints.
