[COCO THE PARROT] I came across this in the New York Times dated 31 years ago and thought it was interesting. ~ Jeff Coco the parrot was the mascot of the Commodore Hotel in Beirut, Lebanon. The hotel was used by journalists covering the conflict in Lebanon. A gift to the hotel from a departing British correspondent, Coco, like most parrots, performs a variety of catcalls, hoots and whistles. But the birds most distinguishing characteristic is its near-perfect imitation of the sound of incoming artillery rounds. It is a reflection of the macabre mood of this city that longtime residents of the hotel find Cocos rendition hilarious. (paraphrased from a longer article, NY Times Nov 7, 1983)
