COEASU Strike: Union Chairman Commends Jonathan for Intervening ARTICLE | MARCH 20, 2014 - 6:44AM | BY AUGUSTINEAMINU REPORTING FERANMIDBY The Chairman, Colleges of Education Academics Staff Union (COEASU) Federal College of Education (Technical) chapter, Olayanju Taiwo, has commended President Goodluck Jonathan’s intervention in the lingering strike by the union. Taiwo spoke in an interview in Lagos on Wednesday. Jonathan had on Tuesday directed that the protracted strike by the lecturers in the Colleges of Education in Nigeria should be brought to an end. The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, told members of the National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Committee in Abuja that the President was keen on ending the strike. Taiwo, while lauding the president`s intervention, however said he should give a directive for full implementation of the union’s demands. He said the union, at its Expanded National Executive Council (ENEC) meeting in Minna, on March 14, was resolute on carrying on with the strike, until all its demands were met. The chairman, however, said that national representativesof the union were meeting with government officials in Abuja and the outcome of the meeting would determine the union’s next line of action. ``The national body would summon an ENEC meeting after its deliberation with the government, to brief the members on the outcome of the meeting. ``It is the outcome of the meeting with the government that will determine, if the strike would be called off or not,’’ he said. COEASU had on Dec. 31, 2013 declared an indefinite nationwide strike to press home its demands. It had complained about the poor state of infrastructure in the colleges, as well as their poor funding. The union also rejected the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System already operational in the Federal Civil Service and the non-implementation of the 2010 Federal Government-COEASU agreement.
