COLLEGE FOOTBALL Alabama maintained the top spot in the Associated Press Poll after the first week of the college football season. The Crimson Tide, who routed Notre Dame back in January to capture their second straight BCS national championship, began their quest for a three-peat with a 35-10 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday. Alabama received 58 first-place votes from the media panel. Oregon jumped to No. 2 with its own convincing victory over Nicholls. The Ducks, now led by Mark Helfrich, racked up a school record 772 total yards in a 66-3 trouncing of the FCS team. Ohio State, which received one first-place vote, fell one position to third following a 40-20 victory over Buffalo. Clemson moved up four spots to fourth due to its 38-35 win over Georgia on Saturday night. The Tigers also received one first-place vote and have their best showing in the poll since Sept. 12, 1988, when they were No. 3. The Bulldogs dropped from fifth to 11th.
