(COLLINS CHABANE FAMILY IN DANGER)Limpopo police say Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane’s family has opted to move from their home about 20km from Malamulele following rumours their house may be attacked. Chabane himself denied this, but four sources in Xikundu village and the Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, confirmed it was true. Malumulele was recently the scene of violent protests by residents who want their own municipality. It’s believed Chabane, whose portfolio is performance monitoring and evaluation, may have been targeted because he’s perceived to be blocking residents’ demands. Four villagers confirmed the family had left the house and said they had seen police patrolling around the minister’s house. “There were rumours and then we were told the minister’s mother has moved out for safety reasons. Police are keeping an eye on the house,” said Malamulele resident Noel Manganyi, who is a member of the community’s demarcation task team. Police confirmed that they acted on what they described as “only rumours”. “There were rumours that the minister’s family would be attacked and we contacted the family, who opted to move to a safer place. We’re making regular rounds to ensure police visibility,” Mulaudzi said. “The threats were apparently made by Malamulele people involved in the protest earlier this month. The area has been a flash point since then and we have sent police members to monitor the area,” he said. Chabane has been accused by some villagers of selling out by not backing their calls for a change of municipal demarcation. Manganyi said he was shocked that some people would think Chabane was against the community’s demarcation struggle. “I don’t think so, but people made their own calculations and concluded otherwise,” he said. Chabane, who was locked in an ANC national executive committee meeting yesterday, commented through his spokesperson Harold Maloka. “The minister said there is no basis to the story. It’s not true,” Maloka said.
