COMMMMMMMPOSSSSSSSST!!!!!!!! I LOOOOOOOOOVE COMMMMMMPOSSSSSSSSST!!!! Yeah, Im weird, but I truly love that gardeners gold. Have you ever thought of composting? The things you throw in the trash every day may be compostable. What composts? Any plant-based matter. Potato peels, apple cores, orange rinds, the outer leaves of lettuce, bread crusts, etc. All those items could go into your compost. These items break down over time and turn into beautiful, dark, earthy goodness for your garden. Even if you dont grow vegetables, compost is great for your flowers--annual or perennial. Think about all the things you throw away. Think of all those items ending up in the landfill. Think about how much you spend on fertilizers for your vegetable or flower garden every year. What if you could save that money by composting? Our pile is nothing fabulous. Its just that..a pile. Its at the end of our yard, near the garden. Everything we can throw in there, we do. Vegetable scraps (ones the chickens cant or wont eat--picky chickens anyway), any litter from the pig pen or chicken house, spoiled food from the refrigerator, grass clippings from the lawn (when we mow)--the list goes on and on. We keep a five-gallon pail with a lid on the porch, and when that gets full, we dump it. Then we go down a couple of times a year and turn it. We have three piles that are in different stages of decomposition; one finished, one working, and one new. The finished compost goes into the garden to amend the soil and add back any nutrients that were depleted from last years crop. What you cant throw in the compost are meat scraps, cat litter or dog poop. The meat attracts unwanted critters and the cat litter and dog poop could potentially have pathogens that you definitely dont want to spread on the garden (ew, gross). Live in town? Cant have a compost pile you say? Problem solved!! There are many, many types of composters available on the market. My mother got one this summer from Amazon for approximately $80. She filled the first one right away, and ended up buying another. See? Theres no reason for you not to compost. Give composting a try. Reduce your contribution to the landfill. Make your own free fertilizer. Sniff, sniff, its so beautiful!! Let me know your composting stories. Do you compost? If so, how? I would love to hear about your love for the gardeners gold. Best wishes and homesteading happiness......
