COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS) ZONE “A” CONVENTION ON SUNDAY 16TH MARCH 2014 AT THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (FUT) GIDAN KWANO, MINNA, NIGER STATE. PREAMABLE Accredited schools from the 10 states ( Niger, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Bauchi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Gombe, Jigawa, and Kebbi) that make up the NANS Zone A composition started arriving on Friday 14th March 2014. While some arrived the following day on 15th March 2014 and where accommodated at IBB University Guest House, Minna. The convention started on the 15th March 2014 around 5:00pm and it was declared open by the Senior Special Assistant to the Mr. President on Youth and Student Matters Comr. Jude G Imagwe, MON, followed by an opening speech by the NANS President Comr. Yinka Gbadebo. Accreditation of NANS Zone “A” Senators starts around 7: 00pm in which all Senators were accredited and given tags. Comr. Gambo Abubakar Muhammed, the outgoing zonal coordinator offered the welcome address and the L.O.C headed by Comr. Danjuma Sarki took over to commence the convention proper. Election of the convention electoral officers was held where five contestants contested for the post of chairmanship but later on, consensus was reached and Comr. Mohammed A. Mohammed (IBB University, lapai) was choosen as the convention Chairman. The Chairman who took over, quickly dissolve the zonal exco and started the electioneering process STATE OF THE NATION We condemn the continued killings of Nigerian students and School children with impunity by the so-called Boko Haram insurgence and call on the government at all level to intensify its effort in curbing the security situations. The murder of innocent children is not acceptable in whatever disguise or name. The Zone also express its fear and concern over the National Conference and calls for more commitment in Nation building, Unity and prosperous Nigeria. STATE OF THE CAMPUSES. The leadership of the NANS Zone A and the general Congress decried the continued imposition of students representative council and interim bodies as the leadership of Students; in our campuses against the democratically elected Students Union Governments. We condemn in totality and call on the school authorities involved in this to hands of their direct interference in students politics on our tertiary institutions. However, the Congress of NANS is requesting the following higher institutions in the zone i.e Zungeru Polytechnic, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria e.t.c. to democratically conduct Students Union Government elections in their institutions with immediate effect or face the wrath of Nigerian Students. The Zone while appreciating the National Leadership of NANS lead by Comr. Yinka Gbadebo a.k.a Ayefele, also urge it to start preparation to conduct National convention within the next 60 days. The call became necessary due to the fact that all zonal conventions have been held and conducted successfully. The Congress unanimously appreciates and thank the Chief Servant Dr. Mua’azu Babangida Aliyu, CON (Talban Minna, Sodangin Nupe and Sardaunan Arewa), the Executive Governor of Niger State for hosting us and ensuring the security of our life and welfare while in the state. We commend the effort of the Chief Servant by upholding and practicing the Servant Leadership Model in Transforming the state into one of the best amongst its contemporaries within his seventh (7) year in office. The effort of the Governor in providing the required dividends of Democracy, quality and free education, Youth Empowerment Programmes and promoting peaceful co-existence among all ethnic group in the state was also appreciated. Similarly, we appreciate the efforts of the Honorable Commissioner of Tertiary Education and the Secretary to the Niger State Government for their Support and commitment to the success of this convention. Our appreciation also goes to the Director, State Security Service and all other Security Organization in the State for providing adequate security and support to Nigerian Students throughout the period of the convention. The active role of the SSA on Students Affairs to the Chief Servant is recognized and appreciated. We thank the Management and Students Union of the Federal University of Technology Minna for the venue and other logistic support they have rendered before and during congress. ELECTION A free, fair and credible election was conducted by Comr. Mohammed A Mohammed the Convention Chairman. Sequel to the successful completion of the convention, the under listed are the names and position of the new leadership of NANS Zone A that would pilot the affairs of the association for 2014.
