CONEY ISLAND, NY -- Saturday afternoon featured a scrimmage between the #5 preseason ranked Abraham Lincoln Railsplitters from Brooklyn AA and the #2 ranked Wings Academy Wings from the Bronx AA. The two PSAL teams unfortunately dont play each other during the regular season because they play in different divisions but we got to see them both on the court competing in a scrimmage for six sets at the storied Railsplitters gym.Jessie Govan After winning the opening set 11-6, Wings led 8-0 with 4:47 left in the second set. The inside out tandem of 610 Georgetown bound senior Jessie Govan and 60 Hofstra commit Desure Buie along 510 senior guard Randy Corporan proved too much for overall Lincoln. That and Wings pressurized defense. The Railsplitters began to step it up defensively but Wings onslaught continued. With 2:40 Wings was up by 13 points and Lincoln was still scoreless. 511 sophomore Donald Flores and 64 junior Jahlil Tripp finally put the Railsplitters on the board with drives to the hole and foul shots but Wings would take the second set,13-7. The third set featured the benches and Lincoln gained momentum as they dominated early and led 13-2 with 2:44. The Railsplitters bench feature promising point guard 58 freshman Tyler Bourne and 66 senior big man Greg Poleon . Wings Academy would fall, 19-8. In the fourth set, the starters returned and Govan went to work early both ends but Lincolns motivation from the previous set carried over. A Lincoln rebound set up a transition dunk by dynamic 511 freshman P.J. Persons which had the Lincoln fans on their feet. Players got in each others grill which had Coach Billy Turnage enraged at Buie, his star PG for falling prey. 5:16 remained and Lincoln led 8-2. The calls were going the Railsplitters way as Wings seemed to be in a mad scramble. Govan briefly quieted the crowd with a midrange jumper but Tripp countered from the charity strip. Buie and 61 sophomore Boubacar Kamissoko shaved into Lincolns lead as the Railsplitters began to go one-on-one. Although Wings cut the lead to a bucket they trailed 12-8 with 3:08. Lincoln would lead by four with a little over a minute remaining but Govan would take charge down the stretch and Wings would come from behind to upset the Railsplitters, 16-14. The fifth set again featured the starters and with Lincoln clearly a bit deflated but vengeful by the previous set, Wings took an early lead but Flores would quickly turn the tied with a steal and an and-1. With 6:19 the score was knotted at 6, things got testy as both coaches lobbied vehemently to the refs for their fair share of calls. Both teams dug in defensively as the lack of scoring reflected but the Railsplitters were slowly gaining the upper hand, leading 10-6 with 4:26 on the clock. A Wings turnover resulted in a bucket by Tripp as Railsplitters, leading by six wanted their starters to end on a positive note. Lincoln pressured Wings and got some pipes to burst. Milking the clock, Person drained a trey with 1:55 to increase the Railsplitters advantage to 17-9. After a Flores make, Lincoln got a turnover, pressuring Buie but missed the scoring opportunity. Wings would only manage to exchange buckets and ultimately lose, 21-15. The benches would compete in the final set. After blasting out in front 9-2 with 2:13 left to play, Wings would punctuate the day, winning, 11-2, with key momentum swinging buckets by Will Martinez.
