CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS ARE ONLY EFFECTIVE ...WHEN YOU ...THE PEOPLE STAND UP AND DEFEND THEM ! In the context of Constitutionalized Policing ,The police must derive their powers from and exercise their authority in terms of the Constitution.Their basic function is to protect the peoples rights. The rule of law in a system of Constitutional rights,presupposes protection of all people against abuse of these rights.SAPS involvement in defense of theses rights is a fundamental requirement. It also necessitates effective action against crime. The right to personal security ,to walk freely in the streets,to sleep safely in ones home and to enjoy without disturbance the use of ones possessions , IS ONE OF THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL OF ALL HUMAN RIGHTS ! WHEN ARE WE GOING TO DEFEND THESE RIGHTS ???
